Design Features (go to top)

Designed for use with diesel engines up to 275 nhp (205 kW). Three forward ranges and one reverse. This transmission model is designed specifically for transit bus applications.
Clutches are multidisc design, oil-cooled, hydraulically-operated, and self-compensating for normal wear. Spur type planetary gears are designed for strength, quietness, and long life.
Automatic upshifting and downshifting within each drive range. Built-in inhibitors prevent downshifts or shifts into reverse unless vehicle speed is within an acceptable range.
Optional engine-driven power takeoff is shaft type and is located at right side of vehicle, parallel with engine centerline.
Output configuration is a 63 angle with the input; output rotation (as viewed from the input) is clockwise in forward range.
Allison Electronic Controls provide: programmable features to perform vehicle and vocational requirements; built-in diagnostics which constantly monitor operation and facilitate the detection of problems if they occur.
An optional hydraulic retarder is available to provide additional vehicle braking. The VR 731(RH) retarder is located at the output of the transmission and consists of a high-efficiency hydraulic, vaned rotor-type retarder designed for maximized space utilization. Retarder power is obtained by directing transmission fluid to the retarder housing where power is absorbed by fluid impacting against the rotor vanes. The retarder rotor rotates at output shaft speed, resulting in smooth braking independent of gear range or engine speed.

Retrofit Retarder Kit
The VR 731 retrofit retarder kit is designed to convert your V 731 to a VR 731. Installation results in a transmission that combines the outstanding reliability of your electronically-controlled V 731 with unmatched supplementary braking capability. Effective in the speed ranges most detrimental to brake life, the retarder kit can significantly reduce your operating expenses through dramatic brake life improvement. See your authorized Allison Transmission service outlet.

The New Right Hand Engine Option

The Allison V 700 transmission is now available with right hand engines and will be compatible with the Series 50, L10 and 6C 8.3 engines. Rather than change all the inner components of the V 700 to accept right hand engine rotation, the engine direction is changed ahead of the input bevel gear. This provides the simplest direction change by relocating the engine input shaft and changing the direction through one additional gear mesh. The heavy-duty helical gears are held in place by bearings fore and aft. This provides minimal gear loss and minimizes noise. A new torque limiting damper provides torsionally smooth input to the transmission, and has the unique ability to provide limited slip during engine start-up and shutdown.
